BARRE TOWN – Ernest E. “Jake” Colgan, 89, of Wildersburg Common, died Tuesday, May 9, 2017 with his family at his bedside at his home.

Born May 19, 1927 in Brookfield, VT, he was the son of Rufus and Minnie (Drown) Colgan. He attended elementary school in East Roxbury and graduated from Northfield High School in 1945.

Jake was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II, from 1946 to 1948 and had been awarded the World War II Victory Medal.

He was first married to Rena Williamson and they later divorced. On July 1, 1976, Jake married Sandra J. Pouliot in Barre City, making their home on Cassie Street and for over 30 years at their present residence.

He will be well remembered as a long-time granite manufacturer in Barre, owning and operating Granite Importers, Inc., specializing in providing building granite.

Jake had been a member of the Vermont Economic Development Association and the Barre Granite Association.

He enjoyed racing stock cars, snowmobiling and boating.

Being a long-time Mason, he belonged to the Mt. Sinai Shrine Temple #3 of Montpelier and the Grand Lodge of Vermont.

Other memberships included the Mutuo, Inc., the Canadian Club and the Elks Club of Barre and the Northfield American Legion.

Besides his wife Sandra, survivors include his daughter Penny Miller of East Roxbury and son Bruce Colgan and his wife, Diane of Berlin; his stepson Raymond Pouliot of Barre City and his stepdaughter Kimberley Minervini of Buckeye, AZ; eleven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters Barbara Sanders and Norma Brunelle and brothers Bernard, Floyd and Leon Colgan.

The Service to Honor and Celebrate his life will be held Monday, May 15, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre.

The Interment service will be held at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Northfield for his immediate family only.

Friends may call at the Funeral Home preceding the service from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641, or the Vermont Food Bank, 33 Parker Road, Barre, VT 05641-9106.
