BARRE CITY – Elsie Louise Owens, 80, a longtime resident of South Main Street, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Woodridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Home in Berlin.
Born on October 9, 1937 in Montpelier, she was the daughter of William and Beaulah (Hurdle) Kemp. She attended elementary school in Montpelier as well as Montpelier High School. She was also a graduate of Rock Point School in Burlington.
Following her schooling she married Allard Mashtare Sr. They later divorced. Years later she married Charles Owens. They made their home in Vermont before moving to New Jersey for many years and eventually moving back to Grand Isle. Charles passed away in 1991. Elsie moved to Barre in 2007.
Throughout her life she had many hobbies and interests. The most important of these were to her included crocheting, knitting, needle point, reading, going fishing, playing bingo and spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her two daughters, Nancy Willey and her husband, Kenneth, of Montpelier and Bonnie Gagne and her husband, Dale, of Lewiston, ME and her daughter-in-law, Linda Mashtare, of Pennsylvania as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews, especially Brent and Ida Dunbar.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth and George Kemp and her two sisters, Elaine Dunbar and Lillian Beede.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate Elsie’s life will be held at the Main Street Cemetery in Hardwick at the convenience of the family in the spring
