BARRE - Elizabeth “Betty” Pauline Ballou Gilbert Grenier, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born August 8, 1928 in Salisbury, she was the daughter of Charles and Lillian (English) Ballou. She graduated from Montpelier High School in 1947.
Betty was first married to Dean F. Gilbert on February 20, 1947. Dean died on April 18, 1974. Betty married Henry H. Grenier on October 11, 1975. Henry died on April 5, 1984.
Betty was best known for her work as a stay at home seamstress. She enjoyed creating clothes especially for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as well as for her many friends. She enjoyed camping, crafts, putting puzzles together, and bingo in earlier years. Betty was the bookkeeper for her husband Dean’s, Gilbert Custom Sandblast for years. She also was quite involved with the Red Mitten Craft Store in Northfield. Betty was past president of the Ladies of the Canadian Club. In recent years, she especially enjoyed her times with special friends Joyce Fleury, Kathy Bolio, and Jim Daniels.
Betty is survived by her son Michael, his wife Nancy, their daughters Betsy (Mark) Memmolo and their daughter Rose and Karen (Chris) Donegan and their sons Maxwell and Charles, as well as a number of nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters, Evelyn Ballou Town and Minnie Ballou Robinson; her two husbands and her daughter Laura Mae, who passed away June 4, 2007.
At Betty’s request, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will take place Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in Hope Cemetery in Barre.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre VT 05641-5369 and/or Central Vermont Council on the Aging, 59 North Main Street, Barre VT 05461.
The family of Betty Grenier wishes to thank Bonnie Parry of SASH, Kathy Bolio, Joyce Fleury, the staff at Berlin Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center, and long-time personal physician, Dr. Robert Robinson III.
