Elizabeth C. Fleming

August 5, 1926 — March 20, 2025

Berlin

BERLIN - Elizabeth Catherine Fleming passed away on March 20, 2025, at the beautiful age of 98 years old at Woodridge Nursing and Rehabilitation in Berlin VT.  She was surrounded by her family in love.

She was born on August 5, 1926, in Limavady, County Derry, Northern Ireland to Robert and Martha (O’Hara) O’Connor.  She attended elementary and post-secondary school in Limavady and completed her nursing degree in Belfast, Northern Ireland.  She enjoyed a long career in nursing, working in Belfast, London, and New York City.  Her final career years were spent working as a caregiver at Berlin Convalescent Center and Project Independence.

She came to America on a nursing contract where she met and married James Fleming on August 11, 1962.  They moved to Berlin, Vermont in 1970 where they purchased and ran a quaint motel while they raised their two daughters.

She semi- retired and moved to East Barre in 1985.

In her later years she lived first at Lincoln House Assisted Living and as her final home at Woodridge.  She was an active member of community life and truly carved out a life of fun, purpose, and many loving connections in each residence.

She loved spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren above all else.

She was a fun, vivacious, determined, optimistic woman who lived life with vigor in the good times and the bad.

She spent time engaged in religious activities, engaging with community events and friends, bingo, knitting gorgeous sweaters, plant propagation, travel, and caring for her grandchildren.  She was fashion first and loved a put together look.  Cheetah animal print was her favorite. We invite those attending the tribute to her life to wear their cheetah for this occasion. She valued her family in Ireland and her heritage there – retaining her citizenship for her entire life.

Her survivors include daughter Mary Fleming and grandchildren, Walter-James Franks and spouse Catherine Franks, Elizabeth Chizmar and spouse Jason Chizmar, Serena Franks and fiancé Nicholas Williams, Krista Franks and partner Matthew Shangraw, Liam Hogan, Cellan Hogan, Eamon Hogan, great grandchildren Coleson Franks, Nash Chizmar, Nora Chizmar, sister Bridgit McAlonan, son-in-law Brendan Hogan, multiple nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, and her husband, her daughter Anne Fleming Hogan, brothers James, Patrick, Robert, and John Gerald O’Connor, sisters Ellen McLaughlin, Margaret O’Connor, Martha Bryant, Susan Feeney, Bernadette Mackey, Mary O’Connor, and beloved great grandson Gabriel Fleming.

A tribute to Elizabeth and to her life will be held at Woodridge Nursing and Rehabilitation in Berlin VT on April 5 at 10:00 in the Benjamin Falls Room.  The Chaplain Frances Weinbaum will conduct this service.   There are no calling hours. There will be a committal service at St. Sylvester’s Cemetery in May.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Autism Speaks – New England Chapter.
