BERLIN - Eleanor “Ellie” Gail Garland, 79, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin.

Born on March 30, 1946, in Brockton, MA, she was the daughter of Octave and Audrey (Hynes) James. She attended local schools in Massachusetts.

In June of 1967 Ellie married Robert Garland. Following their marriage, they lived in many places together including Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire before settling in Vermont.

She was a dedicated homemaker taking care of her children and then her grandchildren in her later years.

In her spare time Ellie enjoyed baking, cooking for her family, playing bingo, watching game shows and shopping.

Survivors include her children Robin Garland Deyo, Patty Deyo, Beverly Lemieux, Wayne Garland, John “Jack” Garland and Donna Garland-Millman, 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, a nephew and nieces and many cousins.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Robert, daughter Lorna Garland, sons Danny and Frank Garland, sister Marian James Fenn, granddaughter Alyssa Isham, and brother William James.

A service to honor and celebrate Ellie’s life will be held on Thursday April 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the Hooker Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Following the service interment will take place at Hope Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
