BARRE CITY – Elaine Grace Spaulding, 89, a lifelong Barre City resident passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Woodridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin.
Born April 11, 1936, in Barre City, she was the daughter of Frank and Eda (Albinola) Calcagni. Elaine attended elementary school in Barre and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1954.
On June 14, 1958, she married Raymond W. Spaulding at the Hedding United Methodist Church in Barre. All of their married life had been spent in Barre City.
Elaine was a member of the Hedding United Methodist Church of Barre where she was an active volunteer for many years. Often found in the kitchen, Elaine always looked forward to the Barre Community Christmas dinner where she worked alongside her family and friends to provide a hot meal and fellowship to those that attended. As consummate volunteers, Raymond and Elaine worked alongside one another throughout the day and would not leave until the last dish had been washed and put away. In addition to her time at Hedding, Elaine was a fixture over the years as both a survivor and volunteer at the Central Vermont Relay for Life. This was a very special cause that she rallied her family around each year, staying up throughout the night, walking laps with her children, grandchildren and friends who could stay awake and match her pace! Always one to put family first, Elaine especially enjoyed the time she spent supporting her grandchildren at the many extracurricular activities they participated in with untold hours spent on fields, in rinks, at pools and in theaters over the years.
Elaine is survived by her children Gary Spaulding (Nancy) of Canterbury, NH; Alison Couture (Richard) and Kevin Spaulding (Sonya) all of Barre, VT; her grandchildren Claire Frances (Jack), Andrew (Samantha), Rachel (Jared), Oliver (Katrina), Parker, Emily Grace, Kyle (Taylor), Molly (Alan) and her great-grandchildren Eden, Camden, Gracen, and Kayden, her brother Robert Calcagni (Deborah) of Florida and her sisters-in-law Sandra Calcagni and Susan Spaulding both of Vermont and her brother-in-law Robert Spaulding also of Vermont as well as six nieces and two nephews.
Elaine was predeceased by her husband, Raymond, oldest son Jeffrey, brother Michael Calcagni, and brother-in-law Douglas Spaulding.
A service to honor and celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Hooker Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. There are no calling hours.
The Spaulding Family would like to thank the caregivers and staff in the Maple Wing at Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing who provided a safe and supportive home for Elaine over the last 3 years.
