Elaine B. Carrington

ELIZAVILLE, NY – Elaine Bonazzi Carrington, 89, passed away on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at her home.

Born August 26, 1929 in Endicott, NY, she was the daughter of John Dante and Zina (Rossi) Bonazzi. Elaine completed elementary school in Endicott and graduated from Endicott High School in 1948. She graduated from the Eastman School of Music in 1952.

On September 21, 1963, she married cellist Jerome Carrington in Stamford, CT. Following their marriage, they made their home in New York City before retiring to Elizaville, NY.

Elaine was a distinguished opera and oratorio singer who had an active international career from the 1950’s through the 1990’s. She had an unusually broad repertoire that encompassed both classical and contemporary works. In the United States, Elaine was particularly active with the New York City Opera, the Santa Fe Opera, and the Washington National Opera. She taught for many years on the voice faculty at Stony Brook University, retiring from there in 2012. Prior to teaching at Stony Brook, she was a member of the vocal music faculty at the Peabody Institute of Music.

In her spare time, Elaine loved cooking and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband Jerome Carrington; her son Christopher Carrington; and three grandsons Robin, Miles, and Keith as well as cousins Joseph Rossi, Doug Rossi, Robin Bergeron and John Brusa.

She was predeceased by her parents.

The service to honor and celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. There are no calling hours. Following the service, interment will be made in Hope Cemetery in Barre where she will be laid to rest next to her parents.
