Douglas K. Olsen

BARRE TOWN – Douglas K. “Doug” Olsen, 82, of Willow Drive passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin.

Born July 10, 1937 in Barre, he was the son of Harold A. and Doris L. (Sanborn) Olsen. Doug attended the South Barre Elementary School and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1955. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served until he was honorably discharged in 1958.

On April 16, 1960 Doug married Rachael Pelkey in the Hedding United Methodist Church in Barre. Following their marriage, they made their home in Williamstown before moving to Barre a few years ago.

He was employed as a telephone repairman with Verizon for thirty-five years, retiring in 1995. Doug’s memberships included the Granite Masonic Lodge #35, Canadian Club of Barre, Mutuo, Inc., and the McDonald’s “coffee group”.   He enjoyed hunting and all outdoor activities.

Survivors include his wife, Rachael Olsen of Barre Town; his son, Steven Olsen of Fort Edward, NY and his daughter, Sandra and her husband, David Lyons, Jr., of Wynantskill, NY; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his brother Gordon E. Olsen and his wife, Nancy of Barre.

He was predeceased by his parents.

The service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Friday, October 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Family and friends may call at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Following the service, interment will take place in Hope Cemetery in Barre.
