BARRE – Douglas A. Abare, 58, a longtime Barre resident, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
Born on April 7, 1965 he was the son of Richard and Florence (Langevin) Abare. He attended Barre Town Elementary and Spaulding High schools in Barre.
During high school, Doug began working in the tire business with his father and brother, working in the family business on the Barre-Montpelier road. He most recently worked in the Food Service Department at the Vermont Psychiatric Care Hospital, a position he held for several years, and one that he enjoyed very much. He was always a worker, and was never without a job for very long, if at all.
He had many interests in life, and he was never one to sit still. His curiosity and restlessness both drove him and would many times cause mischief. He was the mischief-maker, and he loved it. Growing up he was always tinkering with our dad’s tools and equipment, making various ‘improvements’ that he proudly showed off. Doug used to love to hunt, fish, hike, ski, and snowmobile all over Vermont. For the last 14 years, the most important thing to him was going camping with his best friend Donna at “his happy place”, the River Meadow Campground in North Haverhill, NH. Doug was a well-known character, loved to make people laugh, and made friends wherever he went. He will be missed.
Survivors include his longtime companion and best friend Donna Delphia; his siblings Stephen Abare, Amy (Abare) Bombard, and nephew Mark Abare. He tragically predeceased his mother, Florence “Molly” Abare by two days. He was also predeceased by his father, Richard “Dick” Abare.
Doug will be laid to rest with his mother in the Hope Cemetery in Barre during a private family ceremony. If you would like to honor Doug, go out and enjoy life in nature and all Vermont has to offer.
