BARRE – David W. Stonecliffe, 79, Wednesday evening, August 26, 2026, David passed away with love and peace as his wife, Diane, held his hand. He had fought a long battle with cancer.

David was born on April 23, 1947, in Washington, D.C., the third son and fourth child to Lt. Colonel David Worth Stonecliffe, Sr. and Dorothy Maile Bonsteel. David Sr.’s military career provided the family a stay in Thailand, North Carolina, and Virginia before settling Acton, Massachusetts. David graduated from Acton Regional High School in 1965 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Suffolk University in Boston.

On August 24, 1968, David married Susan Faulkner at Trinity Church in Boston. Trinity Church was a special spot for David and Susan, for this was where they first met.

After a brief time living in Boston and San Antonio, Texas, the young couple made their home in Barre, Vermont as they raised their four children.

On February 28, 1974, David and Susan became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They were sealed in the Washington, D.C. Temple May 23, 1975.

In 1986 David went through the suffering and pain of losing Susan to cancer. A year later, he found happiness again when marrying Diane Marie Bisson on November 13, 1987. They were sealed in Washington, D.C. Temple on November 16, 1988.

The blended family added more to David’s busy life.

Early in his career David was a supervisor for Wasson House in Waterbury, Vermont. This was the job he had freely claimed he loved.

He changed careers and began working for the State of Vermont in the IT Department until his retirement.

David was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served faithfully as Bishop of the local congregation (Montpelier Ward), a high counselor, teacher, Executive secretary, Sunday School President, as well as other responsibilities.

In retirement David pursued his love of music that he had since a child. He joined the Green Mountain Barbershop Chorus where he sang bass. David sang in a variety of Quartets and even served as president of the organization.

During David’s retirement years he developed a love for family history and began researching his own.

Volunteering became a priority. Many were thankful of David’s faithful service as a volunteer at the Baptist Church Soup Kitchen in downtown Barre.

David left behind many loved ones: his wife Diane, and the nine children they had brought together; Tanner (Jeffrey) Carroll, Texas; Melinda Stonecliffe, Washington State; Camilla Stonecliffe, Utah; Brian (Stephanie)Stonecliffe, Washington State; Michael (Jennifer) Donahue; Todd (Shelly)Donahue, Maine; Jeffrey Donahue, Indiana; Matthew (Raina) Donahue, Vermont; Mary (Tyler) Bradley, Vermont.

David also left behind 24 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, as well as one niece and nephew his sister gave him, and many more family members and friends who loved him dearly.

Besides losing his first wife Susan, David was preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers and his sister Leslie.

David will be remembered by the stories he told, his services, and the wisdom he shared.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00a.m. Saturday, September 19, 2026, at The Church of Latter-Day Saints, Hershey Road Berlin, Vermont.
