Obituary

BARRE- Dan “Rap” Rapalje, 77, was the epitome of a Renaissance man: a teacher, an athlete, a musician, and a nature enthusiast. He passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Woodridge Nursing Home surrounded by his daughter’s love and the kind care of the nurses, doctors, and the staff at Woodridge.

Dan was born on April 5, 1949, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to Mary Hollyfield and Daniel C. Rapalje Sr. He attended Nichols School, a private school in Buffalo, New York, before continuing his education at Union College in Schenectady, New York.

Dan dedicated 34 years to teaching English and history, beginning his career at Hazen Union High School before continuing as a teacher and coach at Spaulding High School in Barre, Vermont. An integral part of the school community, he coached football, track, lacrosse, and hockey, and was also involved in the Drama Club. His musical talents were well known throughout the community, where he was often called upon to sing the National Anthem at local events.

Dan came to Vermont for the skiing, although he was the first to admit he was never particularly good at it. He eventually settled in Barre, where he found a home and a life filled with love, friendship, and adventure. He cherished the outdoors, especially skiing and sugaring season, but it was along the shores of Lake Champlain that he found his greatest sense of peace.

Dan met the love of his life, Anne, following a motorcycle accident. Anne was the nurse caring for him and was quite insistent that she did not date patients. Even while injured, Dan was persistent, and his irresistible spirit and vivacity eventually won her over. They married in 1979, and their beautiful daughter, Hannah, was born in 1981.

Dan was a devoted husband and father, a loyal family member, and a wonderful friend. He had a gift for making people feel welcome, and many evenings were made brighter by his singing and the sound of his guitar strumming late into the night. Music, laughter, and good company were never far away when Dan was around.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Anne, who passed away in 1983, and his sister, Mary. He leaves behind his brother, Charlie; his sister, Susan; many nieces and nephews; and, most dearly, his daughter, Hannah, and her husband, Dan Beede.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Spaulding High School to support an annual scholarship fund established in Dan Rapalje's honor. Contributions may be sent to: Mya Vallerand Violette, c/o Spaulding High School, 155 Ayers Street, Barre, VT 05641.

A Celebration of Life for Dan “Rap” will be held on April 5th (Dan’s Birthday), when friends and family will gather to sing Rolling Stones songs until the campfire burns out.

In Rap's memory, cheer on the Buffalo Bills, root for the Yankees, play a round of golf, enjoy local theater, sing with your whole heart, strum a Martin guitar, go skiing, spend time in nature, and savor some Vermont maple syrup.

Dan was a man of many talents, many passions, and an extraordinary zest for life. He was deeply loved, and he brought so much life, laughter, and music to the life he lived. He will be remembered with affection by all who had the good fortune to know him.
