BERLIN-Cynthia Carol Coxon Hooker (76) of Barre, VT, passed away on July 3, 2026, surrounded by her loving family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer.
Cynthia was born in Barre, VT to Raymond and Irma Coxon and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1967, Miami-Dade Junior College in 1969, and Lyndon State College in 1971.
She taught physical education and coached various sports teams at Missisquoi Valley Union High School in Swanton, Vt., and Williamstown High School; worked for the Vermont Association of REALTORS for 24 years; and the Montpelier Public School District for 13 years. In retirement, she worked part-time for the First Presbyterian Church in Barre and the Christ Community Alliance Church in Orange.
She married John P. Hooker in 1976 and raised two children. She attended every gymnastics meet, softball game, and soccer match that she could in support of her children and grandchildren, cheering embarrassingly loudly from the stands (often officiating from the sidelines).
Through her children’s activities and church connections, Cindy actively offered her time and energy to various volunteer roles – from coaching to organizing fundraisers and holding leadership roles. She served on the Board of Directors for Sky Acres and the former Green Mountain Gymnastics, was part of the Barre Town Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, coached and officiated softball games, and held numerous volunteer positions with the local Boy Scout packs and troops, from den mother to pack and district leadership roles. In 2009, she received the Boy Scout’s Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor a volunteer can earn in scouting. And in 2012, both Cindy and her husband were honored with a Joint Service Clubs’ Community Service Recognition Award.
Throughout her life, Cindy maintained a strong connection to her faith and was active in three church communities. She grew up attending and eventually was married at the First Presbyterian Church; was a long-time member of the Barre Congregational Church where she was part of the chancel choir, bell choir, and served in numerous volunteer roles; and was most recently a member of the Christ Community Alliance Church where she served as a deaconess, lead bible studies, participated in community groups, and volunteered at the church’s food shelf.
In her spare time, she enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren (and spoiling them with cookies), watching British mystery shows, reading cozy mysteries, researching family ancestry, golfing with family and friends, and exploring ways to deepen her faith.
Cindy is survived by her husband of 50 years, John Hooker; daughter Tammy Hooker, and son John Hooker and his wife Colleen; grandchildren Brienne and Daxton; her sisters Judith Johnson and husband Sanford, and Sylvia Mitton and husband Bruce; 11 nieces and nephews; and countless honorary sons and daughters. She was predeceased by her parents.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, July 24, from 3-5 p.m. at Hooker-Whitcomb Funeral Home in Barre, Vt. A celebration of Cynthia’s life will take place Saturday, July 25, at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Barre, Vt.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to the Christ Community Alliance Church Deaconate Board in Orange, Vt.
