Clifton W. King passed away on Thursday March 7th 2024 from causes incident to age. The first of 13 children born to Leona Ruth Warren and James Courtney King, Cliff was born in Marshfield and raised in Calais. Cliff was a native Vermonter that made his home in East Montpelier for most of his adult life. He graduated from Spaulding High School in 1954. Entered the US Army in 1956 and was a member of the 101st Airborne, discharged in 1958.
Cliff was Married to Shirley Barclay by Walter Luce on May 24, 1972 under an apple tree in Walters yard. It was a 2nd marriage for both Shirley and Cliff lasting almost 50 years until Shirley’s passing in 2021. Cliff was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at the end of May 1968. He made his living as a house painter for many years and as a self-employed carpenter. He loved working in his wood shop as well as gardening. He served as the Bishop of the Montpelier Ward of the Church from June 1983 until December 1988. For several years he was able to serve as a driver for meals on wheels and loved it. He would talk about all the people on his route often. He continued serving in various functions of the church including as a temple worker and as a greeter shortly before his passing.

Cliff had 3 children from his first marriage and he was heavily involved in the life of Shirley’s daughter Susan who predeceased both he and Shirley in 1995. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and grandchildren.
The service to honor and celebrate Clifton’s life will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024, in the Montpelier Ward Chapel at 11:00 a.m., 224 Hersey Road, Berlin, VT. A light lunch will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the chapel. Inurnment will take place at the Doty Cemetery in East Montpelier at 2:00 p.m.
