Claire G. Elmer

GRANITEVILLE – Claire G. Benoit Elmer, 94, of Quarry Hill Apartments, passed away with her loving family at her bedside on Friday, September 23, 2016, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin.
Claire was born in Randolph on October 29, 1921, she was the daughter of Eugene and Wilhelmina (Houle) Benoit. She graduated from Spaulding High School in 1940 and served on the Alumni Committee until 2012. On June 16, 1941, she married Herbert Elmer, II at St. Sylvester’s Catholic Church in Graniteville. He died November 26, 1997.
She owned and operated Benoit’s Store in Lower Graniteville with her husband from 1958-1969. She later worked at Granite Savings Bank and Simonetta’s Inc.
In her spare time, she volunteered at the Central Vermont Medical Center Gift Shop. She loved family gatherings and being involved and surrounded by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and grand-nieces and nephews. Also, she loved to travel and wintered in Florida for many years.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Sandy Elmer of Mesa, AZ; her son-in-law Doug Compo of Williamstown; her grandchildren Kevin Elmer, Toby Compo and Martin Elmer all of NH, Ken Elmer, and Brynn Pelkey of VT; her great-grandchildren Ryan Compo, Christopher Pelkey, Taisha Pelkey, Nicole Compo, Kaeden, Zachary, and Natalie Elmer. Along with many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, her son Herbert Elmer III in 2011, her daughter Sandra Compo in 2014, her sisters Marie LeFebvre, Jeanette St. James, Rita Adams, Helen Bottaro, Cecile Patterson, and Lucille “Tookie” Roy; her brothers Ernest Benoit, Wilfred Benoit and Albert Benoit.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 10, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Sylvester’s Catholic Church in Graniteville. Following the service, interment will take place in the St. Sylvester Cemetery in Lower Websterville.
