BARRE – Charlie A. Smith, 95, left us in the early morning hour to be reunited with his wife, family and friends on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
Born on April 17, 1929, in Staten Island, NY, he was the son of Sidney and Augusta (Zurfluh) Smith.
Charlie graduated from Marshfield High School in 1947. In 1950 he married Bernice Goslant, they had two sons Charles Jr. and Stephen, they later divorced. Then in 1963 Charlie married Corinne Lamberti (Cole), they were married for 53 years until her death in 2016.
He worked for the State of Vermont for 26 years, in various departments before finally retiring. Charlie’s favorite job was being the photographer for the State of Vermont.
Charlie was in the Army and Vermont National Guard for over 30 years, retiring at the rank of Master Sergeant First Class, he had also been the First Sergeant of the Barre Armory. He was also a Trustee of the Barre Fish and Game Club later becoming an Honorary Member, as well as the Chairman of the Credit Committee (for over 25 years) for the Vermont State Employees Credit Union. Charlie was also a member of Patrons of Husbandry (The National Grange) for over 65 years, he was also a 45-year member of The American Legion Barre Post #10.
Many may have known Charlie for his gun shop (Smith’s Gun Shop) he ran out of his basement for over 25 years, he made many friends and loyal customers due to his vast knowledge of guns, ammunition and his honesty.
Charlie leaves behind his caretakers Scott and Maria, brother Doug (NY), his son, Charles Jr. “Chuck” (Jean) of Arizona, his step-daughters-in-law, Linda (Carlo) and Dorothy (Peter), 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren in VT and scattered throughout the United States. Charlie also leaves his very special friend Betty Barberi and good friends Barry and Janet Wadle.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Corinne, his younger brother Robert, his son Stephen, and his step-sons, Carlo “Butch” and Peter Lamberti as well as his step-grandson Peter Lamberti, Jr.
The service to honor and celebrate his life will be held at the convenience of his family in the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Barre Fish and Game Club, Inc., PO Box 130, Barre, VT 05641-0130.
