MARSHFIELD - Charles Edward Bickford, 80, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, at his home in Marshfield, on Wednesday, May 20, 2015.
Born on August 9, 1934, he was the son of Anson and Geraldine (Noyes) Bickford.
Better known as “Charlie” he grew up in Cabot where he worked along side his father in the trucking industry. He graduated Cabot High School in 1952. Charlie was known for his basketball playing skills.
On August 30, 1953, he married Barbara Lyndes of Marshfield, his high school sweetheart. This union was one that was truly blessed in many ways and lasted until Barbara passed away in 2011 in their 58th year of marriage.
Charlie took over the Lyndes family farm shortly after their marriage and he ran the farm over the next 38 years. Charlie and Barbara’s farm was one of the top award winning farms in the state of Vermont. Known for their superior herds and milk production it was Charlie’s pride and joy. The farm is the most scenic in the valley, and was the playground of their three children and many grandchildren.
Charlie’s next venture was the quarry business that he opened on the family farm. Bickford Quarry serviced many surrounding towns, and furnished materials for many state highways. Many will remember seeing Charlie in his bucket loader.
Known for his carpentry skills, Charlie built two houses from the bottom up on the farm and added a huge addition to the barn. His interest in civic matters had him serving on the Twinfield School Board, Winooski Soil Conservation District, Marshfield Volunteer Fire Fighters, and as a Marshfield Selectman. Charlie also spent a period of time as head of maintenance at Twinfield Union School.
His hobbies included drag racing, motorcycle riding, deer hunting, and improvements to the vista at the farm.
Charlie and Barbara spent many winters in Daytona Beach, FL where they owned a second home. Daytona was a spot that brought much joy to both of them.
He is survived by his children, Sheryl Moshinskie and her husband, Bob of Kodak, TN, Larry Bickford and his wife, Amethyst of Brooklyn, NY and Dale Bickford and his wife, Julie of Marshfield; his grandchildren, Eric Moshinskie, Shawn Moshinskie, Stephanie Metcalf, Michelle Moshinskie; Camron Bickford; Christopher Bickford, Jennifer Bickford, and Brittany Bickford; fourteen great- grandchildren; and his sister, Ester Brown of Ledyard, CT.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Interment will take place in the Eaton Cemetery in Marshfield. There are no calling hours.
