BARRE - Carol Penrod Nadeau passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
Carol was born in Barre, Vermont in 1936, the daughter of Millard Penrod and Lucile Mudgett Penrod. She spent her life in the Barre area where she met and married Edsel Nadeau in 1962. She attended South Barre Elementary School, Spaulding High School, and became a registered nurse after graduating from Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in Boston, Massachusetts. She worked for 34 years, first at Barre City Hospital as a Staff Nurse and Head Nurse, then at Central Vermont Medical Center as a Head Nurse, Director of Utilization Review, Director of Quality Assurance and, at the time of her retirement, Director of Quality and Risk Management.
Carol enjoyed gardening, reading, crafts and traveling with her husband. In retirement she was an avid decorative painter and participated in several craft shows. She was a member of The Society of Decorative Painters, The Green Mountain Chapter of Decorative Painters, The Granite City Garden Club, and the Massachusetts General Hospital Nurses Alumnae Association.
She is survived by two brothers William Penrod of Colchester, Vermont and his three daughters Karen Penrod Milam, Suzanne Heath, and Rebecca Louko; and James Penrod and his wife, Susan of Piedmont, California and their three sons Joseph, Mark, and Daniel Penrod. She also leaves her sister-in-law Charlene Nadeau of Graniteville and her children James Nadeau, Sandra Spaulding, and Elaine Nadeau. Also, her nieces and nephews John Nadeau, Audrey Kerin, Cynthia Garand, Debra Garand, Judith Hoyt, and Daryll Dubrovich.
She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Ed; brothers-in-law Willis Nadeau, Sheldon Nadeau, and Douglas Nadeau and sisters-in-law Joan Penrod, Evelyn Vivian, and Freida Garand.
A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the Hooker Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Following the service, inurnment will take place in Hope Cemetery in Barre. In accordance with her wishes there will be no calling hours.
