BARRE TOWN – Barbara D. Shangraw, 69, of Conti Circle, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2015, at her home. She was also known to family and friends as “Barbie” or “Sister Bridget”.
Born on September 8, 1946 in Barre, she was the daughter of Clarence and Dorothy May (Hebert) Spencer, Sr. She attended the Holy Ghost School in Graniteville.
On August 14, 1969, she married Fred Shangraw, Jr. in Websterville. They made their home in Williamstown for many years and later moved to Tennessee before returning to live in Graniteville. He died on November 20, 2002.
In earlier years, Barbara worked at the former Capital City Press as a binder. After her children were born, she devoted herself to her family and her home and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A devoted Catholic, she was a former member of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Williamstown and a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Graniteville and took pleasure in attending church.
She enjoyed building things, woodworking, and doing crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her daughters, Brenda King and her husband, Walter of Barre, Lisa Emmons of Berlin, April Bowen, and Kara Shangraw, both of Barre Town; nine grandchildren, Christopher, Mikell, Barbara, Exavier, Kanya, Melody, Miranda and her husband, Jericho, Marissa, and Jasmine; four great-grandchildren, Aiden, Peyton, Alta and Jackson; a sister, Joanne Smith of Montpelier; aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Clarence Spencer, Jr.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. in St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Graniteville. Interment will take place in the Williamstown Village Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
