WILLIAMSTOWN - Arthur A. Jones, 78, of Soucy Lane passed away peacefully at the UVM Medical Center surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 26, 2019.
Born January 18, 1941 in Barre, he was the son of George and Pearl Jones. Raised by his parents in Barre, he developed a love for the outdoors and learned how to hunt as a skilled marksman, as well as farm and log the family’s land in Middlesex.
Upon turning 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served his country and completed three tours of duty in Vietnam. He often reflected back on the opportunities the military gave him to see different parts of the world and experience different cultures, and an appreciation for the open seas.
After his time in the Navy, he joined the Army Reserves and returned home to Vermont to raise his three children with his former wife, Rebecca Munn Jones. Arthur was employed by the State of Vermont where he worked for the Agency of Transportation until he retired in early 2000’s.
In 1995 he married the late Patricia Benoit. They then moved to Missouri for a short time where he continued to enjoy farming, hunting, and driving around on his tractor.
Arthur loved Vermont and it was no surprise that after a few years he moved back to his home state where he continued to enjoy his love of the outdoors and time spent with his family. Whether you saw Art around town or at his house, Bud was never far behind. Bud may have been a dog, but he was Art’s constant companion and best friend.
Dad was a true jack-of-all-trades. He could work with his hands and used his imagination towards fixing cars, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and anything involving building and repair. He was the kind of Dad that took the time to teach his children and grandchildren the skills necessary to be resourceful in the world. He will be sorely missed, however the time, love, and lessons that he taught his children will live on.
Survivors include his children, George Jones and his wife, Jeanine of Marietta, GA; Tara Reil and her husband, Terry of East Barre, VT; and Rebecca Lew and her husband, David of Kennesaw, GA; his nine grandchildren, Bryce and Wyatt Jones, Jefrey, Tyler and Brockton Cameron, Addison and Hayden Reil, and Connor and Carson Lew; his step-children Kara Chasse and her husband, Matthew and children Bryce, Collin and Patrick; Amy Graves and her family of North Carolina; Rae Dunican and her family of Vermont; his brother Richard Jones of Hawaii; and his sister Leona Berry of New Hampshire as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Patricia Jones and his grandson Carter Lew.
A graveside service with full military honors to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, June 5, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. in the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center.
