MARSHFIELD – Arnold Perley Dexter, 79, of Vermont Route 232 passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin with his family at his bedside.
Born November 13, 1938 in Barre, he was the son of Perley A. and Bertha (Minor) Dexter. He attended Elementary School in Corinth, VT and Townsend, MA. After his schooling, he joined the Airforce and served as an aviation mechanic.
On August 1, 1959 he married Linda Jean Chaffee. Following their marriage, they lived in East Orange and Orange before eventually settling in Marshfield.
He was first employed at the Barre Sign Company and then became self employed as a mechanic and saw sharpener. He later worked for Pierson’s Garage where he was a bus driver and mechanic. He started working with John Cole who had started a muffler shop. Arnold later purchased the business from John with the help of the Northfield Savings Bank and operated it as Cole’s Muffler Center until his retirement.
He was a member of the Montpelier Lodge of Elks BPOE #924. In his spare time, he enjoyed coin collecting, hunting, fishing, trips to Maine and most of all time spent with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Linda Dexter of Marshfield; his children Luther Dexter of Barre; Cathy Dexter of Marshfield; and Raymond Dexter of Barre; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; his sister Louise Tabor of Alabama and his brother Benjamin Dexter of East Barre; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents.
His service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hooker Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre, VT. There are no calling hours.Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home
