BARRE – Allan C. “Al” Wilmott, 73, of Beech Street passed away peacefully on Monday, September 30, 2024, at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, surrounded by his family.
Born on March 23, 1951, in Barre, he was the son of James E. and Beverly (Fowlie) Wilmott, Sr.
Allan attended Barre Town School and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1969, where he played football and baseball. Al played in the 1969 Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. After graduation, he attended Keene State College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1973.
On July 12, 1980, he married Margaret H. Turnbull in Barre where they made their home following their marriage. Margaret passed away in 2019.
Al began his teaching career at U-32 (where he met his wife, Margaret) and in 1987 he started teaching at Spaulding High School until he retired in 2013. He also enjoyed working at Sugarbush Resort with the school ski program during the winter months.
He was a member of the Barre Congregational Church.
In his spare time, Al enjoyed being outside and living an active lifestyle, to include skiing, golfing, baseball, biking, camping, and traveling with his family and friends. Al was a long-time baseball player for Gusto’s, which won a Green Mountain League championship. Al coached many youth baseball, football and basketball teams in the Barre area over the years, he also enjoyed volunteering his time at Spaulding High School sporting events.
Survivors include his daughter Christine Veliko and her husband, Chris; his son James Wilmott and his grandchildren Rhys and Corbin, all of Morristown; his sister Cheryl Zanleoni and his brother James Wilmott and his wife, Karla all of Barre as well as his nephews Jay, Ian, Seth, Kevin, Russell and Christopher; his nieces Kristin, Karen, Marissa, and Whitney.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Margaret, his brothers-in-law Charles “Chip” Zanleoni and Wilson “Bill” Turnbull and his niece Krista Turnbull.
The service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. (noon) in the Barre Congregational Church, 35 Church Street, Barre. There are no calling hours.
