Barre

Barre Town - Alita George, 85, passed away on Monday, November 19, 2018, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Barre on October 16, 1933, she was the daughter of Edward T. and Irene R. (Canales) Rubalcaba. Alita attended Barre City schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in the class of 1951.

On January 17, 1953, Alita married Donald George in St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Barre. They were married for 65 years, 5 of which were spent in Rutland, and all the rest in Barre.

She worked at Allen Lumber Co. and as a paraprofessional at both Barre Town and Barre City elementary schools.

Alita had a library card at Aldrich Public Library at age 6 and continued to be an avid reader throughout her life. Her lifelong love of reading extended to volunteering as a literacy tutor at Central VT Adult Basic Education for many years.

Alita and Donald traveled extensively and especially enjoyed motorcycle rides throughout New England. After retirement the two of them spent winters in Brooksville, FL and summers in VT. Many a weekend was spent at the family camp on Woodbury Lake with family and friends.

The most important thing in her life was family. She enjoyed attending her children's and grandchildren’s school and sporting events. She enjoyed cooking and took pride in her immaculate home keeping. She loved animals and affectionately cared for her long line of family pets. She measured her life through her devotion to family, students, and friends and her life will forever be cherished in the lives of her husband and children.

Survivors include her husband Donald, of Barre Town; son Mark and his wife, Bonnie of Barre Town; son Don and his wife, Camille of Richmond, VT; daughter Julie Rogers and her husband, Bill of Huntington, VT; grandchildren Emily and her husband, Dan Knup; Katie and her husband, Ben Green; Andy George and his partner, Alyson Hevey; Ben George; Sam Rogers and his partner, Annie Grantham; and Alita Rogers (her namesake). She is also survived by her great grandchildren Luke and Ella Knup; and Dorothy and Hildy Green.

She was predeceased by her parents, Irene and Edward Rubalcaba.

Her family would like to thank the ER and ICU caregivers at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin for their compassionate and skilled care.
