Alice B. Smith

ORANGE - Alice Ethel (Bruce) Smith (92) a long-time resident passed away at Woodridge Nursing Home on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

Born in Barre on July 19, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Sheldon and Marguerite (Cardi) Bruce. Alice attended Barre City Schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1951. She worked for many years as a secretary at Washington Electric in East Montpelier.

She was married to the late Francis H. Smith on June 29, 1952, and moved to his family home in Orange at that time.

Alice loved farming, gardening, traveling, and playing the piano. She composed a few songs and her friends at Woodridge loved to listen to her play.

Alice and Francis took several trips across the United States and Alice counted the states she had not visited rather than those she did. She joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1956 and it was a huge part of her life. She loved the church; it’s members and reading the scriptures.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Sylvia (Tim) Leno of Orange, her son Matthew (Colette) Smith of Orange and her son Steven (Diane) Smith of New Orleans, Louisiana. She also leaves behind 9 grandchildren: Michelle (Charlie) Cummings, Jonathan (Stephanie) O’Brien, Christopher (Abby) Smith, Sean (Kimberly) Smith, Kimberlee (Eric) Simpkinson, Robert (Jaicee) Smith, Nichelle Smith, Nathan Smith, and Wesley (Meghan) Smith. She also has 12 great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her parents, her two brothers Sheldon (Lucile) and James (Vicki) Bruce and her two sisters Dorothy (Everett) Johnson and Barbara (Malcolm) Durkee.

Her Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Hersey Rd, Berlin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Woodridge Life Enrichment program.
